Deep Time
Overview
Deep Time follows the adventures of Lauren, a young woman from the East Coast, who falls in love with the West during a life-changing raft trip through the Grand Canyon. While struggling with a crazy mother and a troubled marriage, she begins graduate studies in the male-dominated field of geology and is seduced by a predatory, then jealous and vindictive, professor. Her geology explorations take her on a stormy sea voyage and dangerous back-country treks.
The awakening of Mount St. Helens galvanizes geologists all over the world, and Lauren is determined to witness the eruption of an active volcano. She selects an observation site outside the prohibited Red Zone that is three ridges and six miles from the rumbling mountain. When Mount St. Helens erupts with epic power, she realizes the catastrophic eruption is so far beyond what was anticipated that people will die. In mortal danger herself, she escapes down the mountain just ahead of the deadly ash cloud, but her best friend is missing. She searches for him for four days before learning his fate.
Quotes from Deep Time
“...there aren’t many places like the Grand Canyon, where millions of years of Earth’s history is exposed. Archaeologists work in the time scale of humans, but geologists work in deep time."
“Volcanoes were almost unknowable. Much of their mystery lay four thousand miles down at the center of the earth, forever hidden from human eyes.”
“A USGS geologist monitoring Mount St. Helens told reporters that standing next to the volcano was like ‘standing next to a dynamite keg with the fuse lit. We just don’t know how long the fuse is.’”
"Volcanoes can kill you in a hundred ways."
